My father didn’t fish and none of my childhood friends fished so I didn’t start until I was about thirty years old. The Chairman and MD of a Fleet Street PR company that I did a lot of work for, invited me to join them on their annual fishing trip to Devon. I took my camera and sketch book because I didn’t think that I would ever enjoy fly fishing for wild trout on the River Torridge. I had a couple of lessons and as we fishermen say ‘I was hooked’. For Christmas my wife bought me a glass fibre rod, a reel and line etc. Birthday’s came and she bought me more equipment and I began to visit the local fishing shop and buy lot’s more (mainly unknown to her). Then I was up and running and fished as much as I could with many more annual visits to Devon.

I have been very lucky over the years and caught Blue Marlin in Jamaica, King Fish in Antigua and Shark and Conger Eel in Cornwall.

Apart from the couple of lessons I had in Devon I am mainly self taught and have always enjoyed passing on my knowledge to others. I have given instruction to boy’s that have been in trouble with the law, families on charity days, ladies and children, to ex soldiers suffering with post traumatic stress. I joined the S&TA many year’s ago and have always helped with the casting tuition at the Edenbridge and Oxted show. I am CRB checked and took my exams and became an instructor.

My claim to fame is that I appeared in a fishing magazine a few years ago. It was in a regular monthly feature where I was given a box of fly tying materials, and a box of fly tying tools and within a six hour period had to tie six flies and then catch four trout. Despite it being a very hot day I managed the challenge and won a fantastic Hardy Angel TE fly rod.

I  joined Surrey Fly-fishing having worked with Trevor and Nick for several years, I look forward to meeting new people who are interested in learning how to fly-fish.
